The other side of Pretty,

So neglected but fully visible.

Echoing the question,

“To Be or Not To Be?”,

A question, oh so pivotal.

Pivotal to whether we die

Or whether we live

And how much time and energy we are to give.

The other side of Pretty.

Beyonce said that “Pretty Hurts”

And Lord knows she spoke nothing but the truth.

The truth you keep hidden,

Only known to the unknown and you.

As little girls we are automatically taught to strive to be Pretty

And to distance ourselves for all that is not.

We are taught to quietly steal the show,

Passively-aggressively fighting for that spotlight.

That’s part of the other side of Pretty.

To constantly feel the quiet but strong pressure to be the best, To make sure everyone knows and shall never forget your name; It grows into a unasked-for duty and to rebel against it,

Brings such shame.

That’s just some of the tiny fine print found on the “contract” on the other side of being Pretty.
